The evening I discovered Dynamical Neurofeedback®

It was an ordinary conversation, over a drink, one spring evening.

A friend was telling me about an approach she found hard to define: a kind of brain training with a rather mysterious name. She described, with some amusement, how her partner had changed since he started it. ‘He notices things. He’s more organised. And he’s playing astonishingly well at chess.’

I could have let it go. But something about that story stayed with me. A few days later, I booked an appointment.

The first session

When I put the headphones on for the first time, something happened that I could never have anticipated.

The music flowed smoothly. Then came brief interruptions, unpredictable and light. Nothing spectacular. And yet there was a strange feeling, hard to put into words: as if something was listening to me. Deeply, far beyond what words can reach.

That moment marked the beginning of a process I would observe, session after session, with growing curiosity.

What I noticed over the weeks

No sudden transformation. Rather, a gradual reorganisation: in my body, in my thoughts, in the way I moved through my emotions.

Moments of anger or sadness still came. But their intensity faded more quickly. There was more space between what I felt and what I did. A kind of clarity I had never really known before: a state of non-judgement, of settled attention, of being present with myself.

I was less scattered. I could hear myself more clearly.

So what exactly is happening?

Dynamical Neurofeedback® is based on a principle that is both simple and fascinating.

The brain is an organ that learns. It adapts, reorganises itself and creates new connections throughout life. This is what we call neuroplasticity.

During a session, sensors placed on the scalp read the brain’s natural electrical activity. When the system detects a variation, very brief micro-interruptions in the music give the brain information about its own functioning. From there, it can adjust, naturally, at its own pace, with no conscious effort.

No stimulation. No imposed state. Just information, and the brain’s ability to do what it knows how to do: regulate itself.

What research is exploring

This is not just a subjective experience. For several years now, research has been developing around Dynamical Neurofeedback® / NeurOptimal® to better understand how the brain learns to self-regulate.

Research teams have studied it in specific and varied contexts. This work, still preliminary, reports encouraging changes, particularly in fatigue, sleep and cognitive difficulties. It sheds light on a central principle: the brain can learn, adjust and change some of its responses when it receives relevant information about its own functioning.

Who is it for, in practice?

Over the sessions I lead today, I have seen very different people walk through the door: highly sensitive children, exhausted adults, creative people looking for inspiration, athletes, people going through a difficult time without always being able to name it.

What do they have in common? Not a diagnosis. Not a specific symptom. Rather, the feeling that something inside no longer quite finds its balance.

It is a form of training that supports the brain’s natural ability to reorganise itself.

What I would like to tell you

The circumstances of our lives have a real impact on our inner state; there is no denying it. But our nervous system’s ability to recover, adapt and find its bearings again can make all the difference.

That spring evening, over a drink, I wasn’t looking for anything in particular. And yet something began there.

If you are curious, the best way to understand is still to experience it.
